High gasoline prices can serve as springboard for increased healthful, conscious behavior

Glancing skyward at a gas station sign, it's not hard to be troubled and discouraged by the soaring price of petroleum these days. As of Monday, the average price of regular gasoline in Michigan was $2.13 per gallon.

As Michiganians, we've never had to deal with such high prices. As students who are often broke, the exorbitant cost of gas can put limitations on our ability to travel where we want - be it to class, the grocery store or home for the weekend. As members of a society that is highly reliant on gasoline in everyday life, our hope prices will drop off to more normal levels in the near future is a logical one.

Still, the dramatic price of gas doesn't have to be the dilemma it is becoming. If the high prices sting enough, people should begin acting in a healthier and more environmentally responsible manner.

Carpooling or riding the bus have long been touted as methods that can reduce exhaust emissions and, as such, have been championed by environmentally conscious groups. But even if the environment isn't a primary concern, the cost-saving effects of carpooling or busing to class or work can certainly ease pressure on the bank account.

Similarly, walking or riding a bike to class produces no automobile exhaust, costs nothing, and is actually good for you. As spring begins to set in, you have the perfect opportunity to leave the car parked in the driveway and get some exercise en route to whatever you have planned.

There's no question cars will remain indispensable in some situations, and those situations probably warrant spending more than $2 on the gasoline that runs them. But there also are many times when there are better options than driving a car to your destination. Utilizing those options will probably save you money, make you healthier and help the environment, as well.

Making the best out of this less-than-desirable situation is a socially responsible choice.
