Olin, RHA sponsor sexual health fair

February 9, 2005

As part of Women's Healthy Sexuality Month, Olin Health Center and the Residence Halls Association are sponsoring a Sex & Sensibility health fair today at 7 p.m. in the Union Ballroom.

The event will offer free massages, music, games, door prizes and information on healthy sexual practices.

"We want to create a fun atmosphere to get questions answered and bring people together that might not normally (bring together," said Nicolle Stec, health educator for Olin Health Center. "It's a way for students to know what their options are."

Nurses from Olin also will be on hand for a question-and-answer table.

Stec said 22 percent of MSU students who are sexually active were tested for HIV last year.

With so much sexual activity surrounding the campus, Stec said it's important for health officials to be accessible to students.

"The information that MSU students trust most comes from medical professionals," Stec said. "They're the most viable source."

An iPod also will be raffled off via silent auction, with proceeds going to MSU Safe Place and the Lansing Area AIDS Network.

The fair is the first in a series of events this month encouraging a healthy sexual lifestyle.

Dianne Singleton, a psychologist in the MSU Department of Psychology who specializes in sexual counseling, will discuss pleasure and communication at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 in Bessey Hall.

In addition, students can take part in the second annual MSU Couples Challenge, a game show molded after "The Newlywed Game," at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 in the Union.

Stec said just because the month's events are targeted at women, estrogen isn't a requirement for attendance.

"It's not just for women, it's for men, too," Stec said. "Part of women's health has to do with relationships, and that inherently includes men."

Some students say the programs will bridge a relationship between health officials and students.

"It's good to have stuff like this," psychology sophomore Niesha Harris said. "This is a good way to reach out to the student community and let them know anything can happen, even from one time."
