Med school plans to be announced today

People involved in the move of MSU's College of Human Medicine to Grand Rapids met Tuesday to discuss a set of commitments for the project.

The commitments indicate what the group members intend to do on the project and were formally decided upon at the meeting, said Steven Heacock, chief administrative and legal officer of IdeaSphere Inc., a David Van Andel-run private company that manufactures and supplies dietary supplements.

Heacock also serves as a discussion facilitator of the group of leaders in the expansion. The written commitments are expected to be officially released by Van Andel today, MSU President Lou Anna Simon said.

The specific details of the commitments were unavailable for release Wednesday.

In November, members of Grand Rapids-based Grand Action presented a report about the potential move of the college. The leaders have been meeting since then to figure out how to best go forward with the project. Van Andel was recommended to lead the meetings.

College of Human Medicine Dean Glenn Davis was not in attendance because he was out of town, said Sherry Tompkins, the college's communication manager.

The meeting was "very positive," Tompkins said.

Simon was in attendance on Tuesday, along with a group of organizations with an interest in the project. These groups included representatives from Grand Valley State University, Spectrum Health, Saint Mary's Health Care and the Van Andel Institute.

Simon was the only MSU delegate at the meeting.

"It's a continuing conversation, and what came out of the meeting was really an affirmation from all of the parties that we're going to work together for the expansion of the medical school," Simon said.
