Evaluations postpone 2 area trials

February 4, 2005

Two cases scheduled for preliminary exams today have been waived so the defendants can undergo forensic evaluations, court officials said.

Forensic evaluations involve psychological exams.

Claude McCollum, 27, is charged with open murder and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree in the Jan. 23 death of Lansing Community College professor Carolyn Kronenberg, said Assistant Ingham County Prosecutor Linda Maloney.

McCollum's preliminary exam, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. today in Lansing's 54-A District Court in front of Judge Patrick Cherry, was waived so McCollum can undergo a forensics evaluation, an employee at McCollum's attorney David Merchant's firm said.

McCollum, a Lansing resident, was an LCC student but not in any of Kronenberg's classes, a statement from the Ingham County Prosecutor's office said.

In a separate case, MSU student Jonathan Kenneth Singer, 21, is charged in East Lansing's 54-B District Court with eight felony counts, four of possession of child pornography and four of using computers to commit a crime.

His preliminary exam, scheduled for 9 a.m. today in front of East Lansing Judge David Jordon, was waived to allow for a forensics evaluation to determine criminal competency and responsibility, a court official said.

The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety Detective Bureau had been investigating the case since spring 2004, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said, adding that police were initially made aware of the case by a third party.

Singer lived on campus when the investigation started.

Police and court officials said they wouldn't comment on specific pornographic materials because they are evidence in the ongoing investigation, but said the materials could include movies or pictures.
