MSU groups to rally against Proposal 2

January 11, 2005

It's been more than two months since the passage of Proposal 2, but Jon Hoadley, chairman for the MSU Stonewall Democrats, said the fight for equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community has only just begun.

MSU students and representatives from several local and statewide LGBT and allied groups will hold a rally on Wednesday in opposition to the proposal.

"Proposal 2 should be interpreted as narrowly as possible," said Hoadley, a social relations senior.

Hoadley said the months of opposition to Proposal 2 have been "a difficult battle," but the MSU LGBT campus groups have been meeting regularly to discuss legislative ways to protect their rights.

The rally will include speeches from families who are directly affected by the amendment and Rep. Chris Kolb, D-Ann Arbor.

Stephen Eddins, lead organizer for the event, said the rally will be an opportunity to raise visibility of the LGBT community.

"We want to let the public know that we're not going to be passive," Eddins said. "We feel like our community was kind of invisible, but we are here and we're going to take a stand."

Supporters of Proposal 2 said the new amendment will protect marriage at a time when it is threatened.

"The people of Michigan have spoken very strongly and very clearly," Gary Glenn, the president of the American Family Association of Michigan said in a previous interview with The State News.

Eddins said the rally is about the protection of equal rights for every Michigan citizen.

"We know where things stand," he said. "This is not negative, looking back over Proposal 2 - it's looking forward and moving into the future to make sure this doesn't happen again."
