Howells' 3-point night ensures win, weekend split vs. Falcons

Bowling Green, Ohio - Lately, it has been feast or famine for the MSU hockey team.

After scoring one goal in a 2-1 loss to Bowling Green on Friday, the MSU offense exploded for six goals, defeating the Falcons, 6-4, Saturday at BGSU Ice Arena.

"I know our record's not very good, but honest to God, our quality of play has not been that bad," MSU head coach Rick Comley said.

"We've played a lot of good teams but haven't been able to score with any consistency at all."

MSU was shut down by Bowling Green goaltender Jordan Sigalet on Friday, as he made 46 saves. His brother, defenseman Jonathan Sigalet, scored both of the Falcons' goals.

Jordan Sigalet even stopped MSU senior captain Jim Slater on a penalty shot in the first period, a play that set the tone for the rest of the game.

Saturday, though, was a different story. Jordan Sigalet did not dress for the game because of an unspecified illness and MSU made no mistake in taking it to the untested Falcons netminders.

MSU senior forward Adam Nightingale got the Spartans on the board more than three minutes into the game. Sophomore defenseman Tyler Howells picked up the lone assist.

Falcons forward Rich Meloche tied the game on a two-man advantage, a snipe shot past MSU senior goaltender Matt Migliaccio.

Sophomore forward Drew Miller gave the Spartans the lead back two minutes later, a near carbon copy of Nightingale's goal.

MSU built on its lead when junior forward David Booth ripped a shot from the top of the circle that beat Frazee before the goaltender even knew what happened. Slater and Howells picked up the helpers.

"You know you're not going to get those three on (Jordan Sigalet)," Comley said.

Senior forward Kevin Estrada extended the MSU lead to 4-1 when he beat new Falcons goaltender Jon Horrell, who took over to begin the second period.

Bowling Green did not allow MSU to stay comfortable for long, though, as Falcons forward Derek Whitmore scored two goals in 3:06 to bring Bowling Green back within a goal, 4-3.

Howells and Snavely each scored in the third period.

"He's really grown into a player," Comley said of Howells. "(Saturday), he played defense because I left (A.J.) Thelen at home. It was a big game for him and for us and our confidence in him."

Comley said Thelen was benched for taking "too many bad penalties."

Bowling Green caught a break when MSU's Jeff Dunne deflected Falcons defenseman Michael Hodgson's shot past Migliaccio,

Migliaccio stopped 20 shots for MSU (7-8-1, 4-6-0 CCHA) while Frazee made eight first period saves for Bowling Green (8-4-2, 5-3-2) before being relieved by Horrell for the rest of the game.
