Police to change focus

Officers will patrol bars, indoor areas as weather cools

As the chilly, drizzly late-fall weather settles upon East Lansing, local law enforcement officers say they're anticipating weekend activity to calm down and move indoors.

"It's been pretty quiet this fall, and it tends to naturally get quieter when it gets colder out and football is winding down," East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said.

During the first few months of the semester, extra officers are on the streets, and patrollers generally zip from one call to another. East Lansing's beefed-up patrol will stay intact for a while longer.

"There's still a lot of people in town and a lot of celebrating," Liebler said. But recently, and in the coming weeks, officers are shifting to more proactive policing.

"There will be more bar checks or checking subjects," Liebler said. "We have more time to stop and interact with people when it quiets down a little bit."

Winter weather will bear down on East Lansing later this month, according to David Beachler, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

"The average first date for one inch of snowfall is Nov. 20," Beachler said. He added that there should be more snow than usual this year, and residents will see the effects of a weak El Niño - temperatures slightly below normal and more lake-effect snow.

"We're not expecting anything too severe from this episode," Beachler said of the weather system.

For the rest of the fall, "we're not going to see a drastic warm-up or cool down," Beachler said. "We'll warm up into the '50s, maybe '60s, then cool down at night."

"We still have a home football game left, but we haven't seen any indications of any problems," Liebler said.

Campus policing also shifts as football season moves out and basketball season moves in, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

"Basketball season is coming up and that's going to be busy, but not the way football is," McGlothian-Taylor said. "Football is a different kind of event."
