The American Folklore Society awarded the 2004 Américo Paredes Prize to Kurt Dewhurst and Marsha MacDowell of the MSU Museum. Both Dewhurst and MacDowell were recognized by their preservation of Michigan's cultural history.
The award, named for a prominent folklore and Greater Mexico studies scholar, was presented earlier in the month at the annual folklore society meeting in Salt Lake City. It recognizes those who show excellence in engagement within communities studied by folklorists.
