Committees to present report on liberal arts college

November 23, 2004

The liberal arts committees have completed their work, but MSU's Academic Governance system is not yet comfortable voting on the options.

The Executive Committee of Academic Council met Monday to discuss whether the Committee on College Reorganization and the New Residential College Program Planning Committee reports will be ready for today's Academic Council meeting.

Jon Sticklen, chairman of the executive committee, said the group wants to wait to address the new liberal arts college. The report outlines possibly establishing a new Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences unit that would include the College of Arts & Letters and the College of Social Sciences, or not currently changing any college structure. He said they still wanted to get the report to Academic Council.

"We wanted to get materials to Academic Council so they could be informed," Sticklen said.

The committee also decided to postpone voting on the residential college report until an additional Academic Council meeting on Dec. 7, so members of the College of Arts & Letters could have a chance to formulate their response.

Executive committee member Richard Weber said he wanted to make sure the committee was focusing on the concept of the college and not the details.

Representative from the University Committee on Student Affairs committee and ASMSU Academic Assembly External Vice Chairperson Vinay Prasad said one of the committee's main issues was when students would enroll in the new college, which would be located in Snyder and Phillips halls and has a tentative enrollment of 2006.

"We recommend a fall 2007 timeline because it's hard to recruit students so quickly," Prasad said. "We felt that students currently should be part of the discussion."
