3 students assaulted over weekend

November 22, 2004

MSU police are investigating a series of assaults from the weekend.

Two male students were assaulted early Saturday morning in separate but related incidents, MSU police Sgt. Paul Kuchek said.

The first student, a 19-year-old man, reported being attacked while walking between Wilson and Holden halls at 3:30 a.m. Saturday. He was reportedly approached by two men who began punching and kicking him, eventually knocking him to the ground, Kuchek said.

At one point they took his wallet, which contained cash, credit cards and identification, Kuchek said. The student told police he could not recall how many times he was hit. He was treated by the East Lansing Fire Department medics and taken to Lansing's Sparrow Hospital for further treatment, Kuchek said.

Three minutes later, police received reports of another student who was assaulted, Kuchek said.

The second student also is a 19-year-old male, Kuchek said. He reported being attacked while walking through the courtyard behind Wilson and Case halls at about 3:33 a.m. Saturday, by two men with a similar description to those in the first assault, Kuchek said.

The men reportedly punched the student in the face and his T-shirt was ripped as he tried to break free. The student told police he was able to fight back and ran away and notified authorities. The men reportedly did not attempt to pursue the student.

The second man did not require medical treatment.

In both cases, "the only motive appears to be robbery," Kuchek said.

There were no weapons involved in either case, Kuchek said. The Lansing Police Department's K-9 unit was called to assist, but was unable to find anyone, he said.

The suspects were described as one white male and one black male, both about 20 years old.

Composite sketches should be available early next week, he said.

On Friday night, a 22-year-old male student reported being assaulted by a stranger while walking south along Birch Road between Wonders and Wilson halls, Kuchek said.

The student told police he noticed being followed shortly after 11 p.m. while on his cell phone. He reportedly ended the call and asked the man if he needed help. The man reportedly said no, but attempted to force the student to give the man his cell phone, Kuchek said.

The student told police he was able to run away. There were no injuries.

The suspect is reportedly 5-foot-6 and 160 pounds with curly brown hair, Kuchek said. He was wearing a tan fleece jacket and blue jeans and had an odor of alcohol.
