South Complex to focus on tailgating

Student forum to discuss game day trash, safety issues

The trash, the noise and the disorderly people - it has all become too excessive for students living in South Complex.

Stemming from recent tailgating restrictions and discussions, Wilson Hall's auditorium will host a town hall meeting 7:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss issues relevant to South Complex residents.

The recently announced restrictions on drinking games, and a tailgating time limit of five hours before and two hours after home football games announced Monday might be discussed.

"This discussion is geared towards residents of South Complex," said Michelle Vital, assistant director of Wilson Hall. "The purpose was because there has been a lot of talk and provisions about tailgating, and we really wanted student feedback."

Vital said concern came from trash left near the Wilson tennis courts and the disorderly people who try to enter locked residence halls in South Complex.

Student leaders from the Residence Halls Association and ASMSU, which passed a set of tailgating restrictions last week, will attend the meeting and field questions that students might have about the policy, Vital said.

ASMSU suggested a ban on glass containers, dedicating emergency routes and increasing the number of portable toilets, garbage cans, emergency personnel and water and food vending. The recommendations are still being considered for this weekend's football game against Illinois.

Vital said the concerns raised by students during the meeting Thursday might also be passed to the MSU Board of Trustees.

The board will discuss tailgate restrictions at their work session Thursday and might discuss them at the regular meeting Friday.

"Our primary focus is to hear all students and give student leaders a chance to respond to them and voice their own concerns," she said.

RHA President Ernest Drake said he expects to address foot traffic within residence halls and trash left by the tennis courts.

"Not many people are happy with the outside - the trash that's left and the carnage after games," he said. "Many residents are telling their housing officials, and they have taken initiative to protect the halls, but the main concern is the outside."

Drake said he has been in contact with residence hall directors to field concerns.

Some students from Wilson Hall said the tailgating problems need to be discussed further.

"It's gross when it's the next day and trash is everywhere," said Nicole Miller, a psychology freshman. "It's not a good sight."

Amanda Bell, a communication sophomore, who also lives in Wilson Hall, said she only sees the trash as a problem.

"Tailgating is kind of crazy, but the only thing I see is that it's just gross," she said. "It's just a bunch of people trying to have fun in a small space."
