Counterfeit money exchanged in dorms

Desk receptionists across campus reported two suspects trying to pass counterfeit $20 bills Monday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

A 49-year-old male university employee said a 20- to 25-year-old black man entered West McDonel Hall Monday afternoon and asked the 22-year-old female desk receptionist for change for a $50 bill.

She reportedly explained she couldn't change anything larger than a $20 bill. He then gave her a counterfeit $20 bill, she gave him two $10 bills, and he left the building.

He was described as being about 5 feet 7 inches tall, of medium build, with black hair braided on each side of his head. He was reportedly wearing baggy gray sweatpants, a black T-shirt and a gray zip-up sweater.

Later that evening, a 21-year-old female student desk receptionist in West Wilson Hall said a 6-foot-1 black man entered the main doors and went through the same speech as in McDonel Hall - he asked for change for a $50 bill, then a $20 bill, and left with two $10 bills.

The second man was described as 25 years old and 180 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair in cornrows. He had a large build and was wearing a blue sweatshirt and a green MSU jacket.

Just after the second suspect left West Wilson Hall, the desk receptionist told police she received a call from the desk receptionist in East Wilson Hall warning that someone tried to counterfeit a $20 bill there several minutes earlier.

Similar incidents in Wonders Hall were also reported.

Investigation continues, and McGlothian-Taylor warned students and employees to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills.
