Health day to focus on women's issues

September 8, 2004

The MSU College of Nursing will hold its first-ever women's health day on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day will start at the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development, 3535 Forest Road, with an expected audience of 60-75 women.

A morning of speakers discussing dieting, stress and other health-related issues, followed by an afternoon dedicated to relaxation and fitness will complete "It's All About You: A Day for Women."

The cost for the day is $135, or $75 per session.

MSU Provost Lou Anna Simon, who will speak at the event, said she supports the intent behind the health day.

"It takes cutting (edge) health knowledge and makes it more accessible to the people" Simon said.

One of the topics to be addressed is complementary therapies, or treatments that "enhance conventional medical care," such as massage and yoga.

"They don't require prescriptions or have side effects and they often times can help a person's coping ability and their stress level, which enhances their quality of life," College of Nursing Professor Gwen Wyatt said.

During the second session, women will be able to choose between an afternoon of golfing at the Forest Akers West Golf Course or exercise with a personal trainer at the University Club Fitness Center and Spa.

"It gives everyone an opportunity to relax and pamper themselves and possibly find a fit with how they'd like to work out themselves," said Pam Martin, communications manager for the College of Nursing.

Fun with fitness is a key element to staying active, morning panelist and Olin Health Center educator Jon Kermiet said.

"People are much (more) vital and alive if they're passionate and interested in something, even if it's not highly aerobic," Kermiet said.

Kermiet intends to speak about how to reap the greatest benefit from the exercise they do and how much activity is actually needed to maintain a healthy life style.

On the panel with Kermiet will be Ronda Bokram, an Olin nutritionist and Marilyn Rothert, the dean of the College of Nursing.
