Police spot, arrest 2 suspects on campus

MSU police made two separate arrests Monday involving one suspect who fled from IM Sports-West, ending on the roof of Munn Ice Arena and another who has admitted responsibility to at least 20 thefts of property from various campus buildings, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Union, MSU police officer Heather Stefan recognized a male burglary suspect who East Lansing police and Michigan State Police had been searching for in accordance to the robberies and other crimes, a report stated.

The stolen property, valued at about $80,000 includes computers, cash, keys and other office equipment, McGlothian-Taylor said.

MSU Police Detective Lt. Douglas Monette worked on the case with other detectives from the university's Department of Police and Public Safety and the State Police.

"Without assistance from the State Police and a team effort from detectives (Steve) Beard and (Debra) Buffmeyer and our department, this person may still be out there committing crimes," Monette said.

About two hours later, MSU police Officer David Isabell was dispatched to IM Sports-West to respond to a call that a 22-year-old male who was a non-student had threatened to bring a gun into the building, McGlothian-Taylor said.

"There was an individual at the facility playing basketball, and he had gotten into a verbal altercation with another individual there.

"He became angry and said he was leaving and he was going to return with a gun," McGlothian-Taylor said.

Taylor said when IM Sports-West staff members pointed out the individual to the officer, the suspect, who had briefly left the building and was returning without a weapon, disobeyed a lawful order to stop for the officer to talk with him and he started to run.

After running northwest through the wooded area behind Demonstration Hall, the subject climbed onto the sloped Munn Ice Arena roof.

While officers, including four K-9 units, set up around the area, MSU employees inside Munn noticed the subject enter the building and exit through the south doors, McGlothian-Taylor said.

The subject was then apprehended by MSU police Sgt. Matt Merony and his K-9 Xena, who were assisted by Lt. Sue Busnardo.

Both subjects, whose names could not be released due to open investigations, were arrested without conflict and are in jail outside of East Lansing in relation to other crimes.
