May 17, 2004

Idong Ibok, a 6-foot-10-inch basketball player from Montverde, Fla., signed a National Letter of Intent, May 5, to attend and play for MSU in the 2004-05 season. A Nigerian native, Ibok averaged 10 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.2 blocks last season at Montverde Academy.

Ibok was first spotted by MSU's assistant basketball coach, Doug Wojcik, at a summer camp. Many schools courted Ibok, who looked at Georgia and Virginia Tech before deciding on MSU. Florida State, DePaul and Charlotte were also on Ibok's list of possible schools.

"We are excited about his size, his length and exceptional athleticism," MSU head basketball coach Tom Izzo said. "We are adding a player who is a great complement to our team."

An honor roll student at Montverde Academy, Ibok will be taking summer classes at MSU to start his studies early. Ibok's intended major is computer science and engineering and he has his sights set on the National Basketball Association.

"When you combine his athleticism, maturity and intelligence, he is a great fit for the Spartan basketball program," Izzo said.
