Campaign seeks to mediate file sharing

April 30, 2004

The Get Real Campaign, which started about two months ago, is looking to get college students and the Recording Industry Association of America to discuss alternatives to illegal file sharing.

Campaign director Ethan Clay said the group is looking to get information out to college campuses after a second round of lawsuits were announced Wednesday. The RIAA announced a total of 477 individuals - 69 from universities - are being targeted for using peer-to-peer networks to illegally distribute copyrighted songs.

Clay said the RIAA should not file lawsuits against the action until better alternatives to obtain audio and video media exist.

"While they are logical, lawsuits should not be taken on at this time," he said.

The campaign began at Boston University and is spreading awareness around the country to college students and law professors.
