Association fills 6 of 15 Executive Board positions for upcoming session

April 2, 2004

Six of the 15 empty Executive Board positions were filled for the next session of the Residence Halls Association at its General Assembly meeting Wednesday.

Among the 14 bills that were considered by the assembly, seven were dedicated to hiring for the next session's Executive Board. One of the bills was postponed until next week because of a scheduling conflict with the candidate.

All six of the candidates up for confirmation were approved by a wide margin. The closest vote was 23-2-2.

The new board members and their positions are: Director of Treasurers and Allocations DeAndre Wright, Michigan Organization Communications Coordinator Victoria Good, Comptroller Gary Shivers, National Communications Coordinator April Bennett, Director of RHA Movie Offices Adam Raezler and Director of Campus Center James Henderson.

Of the six, Bennett, Raezler and Henderson were reconfirmed into their current positions. Wright and Good are freshmen and serving their first terms on the board.

"I honestly believe the (General Assembly) made an excellent choice in confirming all the candidates," said Ernest Drake, director of Racial Ethnic and Progressive Affairs and president-elect. "I think we'll be an awesome team working together."

Wright is a public administration and public policy freshman. He served on the assembly last semester and is currently the treasurer for Akers Hall Student Government.

"My No. 1 goal is to bring consistency from hall government to in-hall student groups," he said.

Good said being a freshman on the board should make for a different experience.

"It'll definitely be a year of learning. I thought that being a freshman might have been a factor in not getting the job, but it's not how much time you put in, it's what you do," she said.

Along with hiring, the assembly also considered three policy bills. One of them established a special committee to review the channels carried by the university, another created a new representative to the body, and the third aimed to create a new section of the bylaws.

The Cable Review Committee will consist of 10 members: five from the General Assembly and five from RHA members at-large. They will survey on-campus students to find out which channels should be added or taken away.

RHA's newest representative to the body will report from You Vote, a student organization aimed at increasing voter participation among college students. You Vote is a nonpartisan organization.

Finally, a bill that hoped to give provisions to at-large voting seats in the assembly was recommitted. That means that the bill will be sent back to committee for reworking.
