Juan Cole, a history professor at the University of Michigan, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Wonders Hall Kiva. His presentation is "Shi'ite Movements in Iraq Since the War." This lecture is part of the series "The Middle East, United States Policy, and the Many Faces of Political Islam" hosted by James Madison College and the Department of History. Other lectures in the series include:
· "Muslims and Politics in India and Pakistan," 8 p.m. March 23 in 206 Old Horticulture Building. U-M History Professor Barbara Metcalf will speak.
· "U.S. Policy and the Prospects for Democracy in the Muslim World," 7:30 p.m. March 29 in Wonders Hall Kiva. Shireen Hunter, who is the director for the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Islam Program in Washington, D.C., will speak.
· "Democracy and Modernism Through Islam: The Justice and Development Party's Victory in the Turkish Election of 2002," 7:30 p.m. March 31 in Wonders Hall Kiva. Kemal Karpat, a history professor at University of Wisconsin, will speak.
· "Just War and Jihad: Do the Twain Meet?" 7:30 p.m. April 19 in Wonders Hall Kiva. Sohail Hashmi, Mount Holyoke College associate professor of International Relations, will speak.
