Marksmanship Club to sponsor seminar

March 17, 2004

The MSU Marksmanship Club is sponsoring a crime prevention seminar to raise awareness about personal safety.

"The whole idea is to make people more aware of common crimes … and steps you can take to avoid them so you won't become a victim in the first place," said Phillip Delekta, a microbiology junior and president of the club.

The program, "Refuse To Be A Victim," is organized by the National Rifle Association. The event will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. March 22 in 1420 Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building.

Delekta said the NRA has been running the program for about 10 years, and it's the first time the Marksmanship Club has brought it to campus.

"The whole point is to avoid getting in the situation where you have the need to defend yourself," Delekta said.

The seminar will include information concerning home and phone security, travel safety, self-defense strategies and safety on campus.

Robert Fauls and Roger Parry, certified instructors of the course, will teach the four-hour class. Both men have worked with other NRA-organized programs and the Brighton Police Department.

A limited number of openings are available for the seminar and reservations are required.
