Former Spartan hurt in Blackhawks game

March 25, 2004

Former Spartans defenseman and Hobey Baker finalist John-Michael Liles, currently with the Colorado Avalanche, suffered a right knee injury in Tuesday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

In the Avalanche's 2-2 tie with the Blackhawks, Liles got tangled with Scott Nichol in the third period and had to be helped off the ice. The Denver Post reports there was no word from the team afterward on Liles' condition, and the injury appeared serious.

In 76 games played with the Avalanche, Liles has eight goals and 23 assists, including 28 penalty minutes. The Zionsville, Ind., native was projected to spend the season with the AHL's Hershey Bears, but now is a possible nominee for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top rookie.

Colorado clinched a playoff spot despite the tie.
