Weekend best bets

Music

If you like it loud, hot and heavy, head out to The Temple Club, 500 E. Grand River Ave. in Lansing's Old Town, tonight for pure rock fury presented by Flint-based Diver and Lansing's own Farewell Arsenal. Diver proves that good things can still come from Flint-town. The group's latest album, "The Ophidian Current," is full of relentless metal guitar and mixes growling with mellow vocals. Diver's drummer, Ryan Shaw, said although he'd classify the band as hard rock, it's not nearly as heavy as most of the music coming out of Flint.

"We find it kind of hard to get out and play because when people that go to the bars listen to our CD, they actually think it's a little soft," he said.

Shaw said Diver's sound will mix well tonight with Farewell Arsenal's tunes.

"They're all over the place - they get heavy and can be soft," he said. "They do like Marvin Gaye covers, OutKast covers, they have a DJ, and he raps a little bit sometimes. They are really good."

The cover charge is $5 for 21 and older and $8 for 18 and older.

The Point After Eatery & Pub is celebrating reggae legend Bob Marley's birthday; the Jamaican-born musician would have turned 59 today. Festivities, which include live music and Red Stripe Beer, get under way at 10 p.m. The Point After is located at 3130 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Lansing. Music will be provided by Raz Marcus, who DJs the Reggae Sunsplash show from 2 to 6 p.m. Sundays on WDBM (88.9 FM).

If you're in need of a little twang in your life, head out and see The Gentleman Callers at Dagwood's Tavern & Grill at 2803 Kalamazoo St. in Lansing on Saturday, Feb. 7. The group combines the essentials of good country music with the energy of rock 'n' roll. The quartet writes all its own material, but isn't opposed to giving a tip of the hat to Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings. Along with The Gentleman Callers, catch local band Clementine. The bands will start playing around 10 p.m.

Comedy

Doug Stanhope, the new co-host of Comedy Central's "The Man Show," is coming to Lansing to test out some new vulgar, testosterone-filled material. His act spawns from true-life graphic perversion to brandish social criticism. If you're not a member of the politically correct generation, this show may be something you'll enjoy.

The gross-out comedy routine will begin today and Saturday at 7:45 and 10 p.m. at Connxtions Comedy Club, 2900 N. East St. in Lansing. Tickets are $16.50. Call (517) 482-1468 for more information.

Theater

To get a glimpse into how the music business is both ever-changing and evil, Riverwalk Theatre, 228 Museum Drive in Lansing, has the musical "Dreamgirls" running Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $16 for the public and $14 for seniors and students and can be reserved by calling (517) 482-5700. Visit riverwalktheatre.com for more information.
