Friday:
· Grand Rapids-based guitar-playing songstress Brie Stoner will roll into the Union Ballroom tonight for a free show that also will feature local groups thefarewelldrive, Westrin and Mowry and the giveaway. The University Activities Board event starts at 8 p.m. and is free to students, staff and faculty with a valid MSU ID. One outside MSU guest per ID is allowed.
Saturday:
· What can be expected from Annie Quick's show at Mac's Bar this weekend? Well, the rock guitarist said she loves nothing more than a good concert and that she and her band rock it out every night on tour. "I love the experience of going to a rock show as an audience member, and I want my ass to be kicked - I want to come away from it feeling a little run over," the New Yorker said. "If I can kick someone's ass and have them thank me for it, I just feel so good about myself." Quick will perform Saturday night at Mac's Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing, with SSRI, Daniel "Judah" Johnson and Big Breakfast. The first band will take the stage around 10 p.m. Cover is $5 for those 21 and up.
Theater
All weekend:
· If interaction is what you crave, then "Late Nite Catechism" will answer all of your prayers. The one-woman show will take audience members back to the days of Catechism with laughs the whole way. The show will play at the Wharton Center's Pasant Theatre through Sunday. Tickets are $36 and are available by calling (800) WHARTON or (517) 432-2000.
· But if drama is what you like, then the Lansing Civic Players have the perfect performance for you. "Driving Miss Daisy," the classic tale about an older woman and her struggle for independence from her chauffeur, opens today and will run through Feb. 29. Performance times are 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbott Road in East Lansing. · And then there are always the plays based on relationships. "You Can't Take It With You," the story about a young couple that introduces their parents for the first time since they've been dating, will start at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday at Lansing Community College's Dart Auditorium, 500 N. · For a less cheery look into the life of a married couple, the Bath Community Theatre Guild will be performing the classic Edward Albee tale, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" The play will take place at the James Couzens Memorial Auditorium, which is adjacent to the Bath Middle School, 13675 Webster Road in Bath. · And lastly, Icarus Falling Theatre Ensemble will be performing "Closer" at the Creole Gallery, 1218 Turner St. in Lansing, through Feb. 28. The Patrick Marber piece tells the tale of four people who fall in and out of love and how humor and heartbreak show the realities of relationships in modern dating. · An alternative to concerts and movies that will keep you laughing from live entertainment all weekend long. Joe Moffa will hit the stage at Connxtions Comedy Club, 2900 N. Benefit
Sunday:
· This year's MSU Museum Chocolate Party Benefit offers an advance preview of the Chocolate Party creations, an exclusive demonstration by a master chef, a year-long MSU Museum membership and a behind-the-scenes tour of many of the museum's collections. Partygoers at this year's "Chocolate Lovers"-themed event will get the chance to sample some of the nearly 7,800 chocolate creations donated by local chocolate vendors. With the chocolate works of culinary talents in chocolate cakes, tortes, candy, fudge and sculptures, local artists usually raise an average of $15,000 for the Museum. The benefit will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Kellogg Center. Ticket prices run between $30 and $75. For more information call (517) 355-2370.
Competition
Saturday:
· Rube Goldberg Machine Contest Regionals is a model of complexity. Students will showcase their Rube Goldberg machines, which use a minimum of 20 steps to mark and cast a ballot. Both high school and college students will be competing for a chance to make it to the national competition at Purdue University. The competition begins at 10 a.m. in rooms C-103 and C-104 of Holmes Hall.
