Police investigate windows broken with rocks, BBs

Total damage to campus buildings more than $3,000

February 4, 2004

MSU police are looking for subjects involved in breaking several windows across campus in the last week.

The worst of the two instances occurred on Jan. 28 between 2 and 3 a.m. MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said two university employees and a student reported windows broken in Student Services, Erickson Hall and Wells Hall, resulting in about $2,400 worth of damage.

Police said the windows - four in Student Services, five in Erickson Hall and three in Wells hall - were broken by rocks thrown at them.

A female student first reported the case in Student Services, followed by a report filed by a university employee in Wells Hall.

The broken windows in Erickson Hall also were reported by a university employee, who said he heard a loud crash that alerted him to check out the building.

That employee also caught a glimpse of the subject as he ran away from the building toward Farm Lane. The subject is described as a 19- to 25-year-old man. McGlothian-Taylor said it's possible the same person is involved in vandalizing all three buildings.

If police catch the person responsible, McGlothian-Taylor said he would face charges of malicious destruction of property, and it could be considered a felony offense because of the amount of damage.

A separate incident happened Feb. 1, this time involving a BB gun.

An 18-year-old male student told police two dorm room windows in West Akers Hall had been shot out with BBs. Damage is estimated at $300.

A short while later, a 19-year-old female student told police her Armstrong Hall room windows had been shot at with BBs, causing an estimated $450 in damage.

Both occurred between 10:30 and 10:45 p.m., and police have no description of the subject. McGlothian-Taylor said police are investigating and are unsure if there is any relation between the two BB gun shootings.
