Olin series to inform women on importance of staying healthy

Month of events deals with sexual, physical well-being

February 10, 2004

Olin Health Center is coordinating a month-long series of events to address women's healthy sexuality during February.

It's the second women's healthy sexuality month at MSU, and was developed by Olin health educators to inform MSU women about the importance of gynecological exams and keeping their bodies healthy physically as well as sexually.

"There were some needs in the area of women's sexuality, such as pap smears," Olin Health Center health educator Dennis Martell said.

Martell will be a guest at 7 p.m. on WDBM's (88.9 FM) Tuesday radio show, which will address issues of women's healthy sexuality, including gynecological visits, relationships and contraception. Two surprise guests will assist Martell in answering call-in questions, and callers can win prizes for their efforts.

Dianne Singleton, a psychologist in the MSU Department of Psychology who specializes in sexual counseling, will be co-hosting a workshop on relationships at 7 p.m. Wednesday in 111 Berkey Hall.

Shannon Kilway, the health and safety director for the Residence Halls Association and a sexual health mentor at Olin, said the relationship workshop will discuss what makes a good relationship, what people's definitions of commitment are and how couples communicate.

RHA will be co-sponsoring a Couples' Challenge at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in the Union Gold Rooms A and B that will be similar to "The Newlywed Game" TV show.

Ten couples have volunteered and five couples will be chosen randomly from the audience to participate.

"The whole point of it is to get couples up there and ask them questions and make them think about their relationship," Kilway said. "And to give them a glimpse of other people's relationships and how they work."

Three couples will receive prizes and the champion couple will receive a weekend getaway at a bed and breakfast.

Throughout the month, health advocates will be passing out fliers and pamphlets with questions and answers about women's sexuality in relation to pleasure and the importance of pap smears and gynecological visits.

The University Activities Board also will be hosting "Sex and The Real World" on Friday, Feb. 27, with members of MTV's reality show "The Real World" discussing issues of sexuality.
