Sleep fair to help students cut stress

January 27, 2004

Starting a new semester can be a stressful time for students.

But Olin Health Center is sponsoring a series of events to help students ease the stress. "Healthy Ways to Straight A's" is coordinated by health advocates at Olin.

Nutritional science junior Sarah Sebastian is helping coordinate the sleep fair, which will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Gold Room B of the Union.

The fair will feature booths and informational tables for students to visit as well as free massages. Residence Halls Association is co-sponsoring the event.

Representatives from Sleep Diagnostics of Michigan will be available at the fair to answer students' questions.

Stress can manifest itself with physical symptoms, including headaches, muscle tension, depression, anger, sleep disturbances, feelings of exhaustion, upset stomach, loss of appetite, diarrhea and teeth grinding.

The advocates also will be distributing bookmarks with symptoms of depression around campus.

"We're trying to let the MSU community know about the important effects of certain heath issues on academic performance," said Lindsay Allegra, a kinesiology senior who also works as a health advocate at Olin.
