Rivalry

Saturday matchup one for history books; show green spirit, celebrate responsibly

Go green, go white or go home. Saturday's game is unlike any other Spartan-Wolverine matchup from the recent past.

This time around, both No. 9 MSU and No. 11 U-M have a legitimate shot at the Big Ten title. This time around, there's more on the line than state pride.

It's about the bragging rights we'll have for almost a year until the next time the two football teams will meet. And it always feels good to hang something over the heads of those Wolverweenies.

So with all that in mind, as your beloved Spartans take on the Wolverines tomorrow afternoon, we can't stress enough the importance of celebrating responsibly.

With that means even acting hospitable to the rival fans. There's no need to yell obscenities at a maize and blue fan - just yell out, "Go green," and someone surely will answer you back. Show them, the media and each other which school has the most class.

As we've all come to know, college isn't just about academics. Nor is it just about athletics.

It's about the feeling we will get tomorrow, our voices sore from singing the fight song at the top of our lungs, hands hurting from clapping for every key play and legs cramping from jumping up and down for every touchdown - it's about school unity.

It should be noted that while we all will enjoy the festivities of tomorrow, Jeff Smoker can, and should, enjoy it a bit more. Smoker rightfully was able to earn his spot back on the team after months of getting back from rehabilitation.

Now he's back both mentally and physically. We're not saying we should embrace Smoker as an epic hero but show him the respect for what he's fought against and where he has taken this talented squad.

So this weekend, whether you're crowded inside Spartan Stadium in the cold, at a bar enjoying the game on a big screen TV or just at home with friends cheering on the team, be responsible. Go green.
