Women's golf team wins home tournament

September 22, 2003

For the second consecutive year, the MSU women's golf team won both team honors and the individual championship at the Mary Fossum Invitational this past weekend.

"I just told the girls I hope they realize what we can do this year with the numbers we're putting up," head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "We have aspirations of winning the Big Ten tournament and finishing in the top 10 of the NCAA tournament."

The Spartans finished the 54-hole tournament with 901 total strokes at Forest Akers West Golf Course against 16 teams, four ranked 43rd or higher in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Senior Allison Fouch won the individual competition after her second playoff this season to anchor the Spartans in their 25-stroke win over No. 2 Kent State.

"The team championship is what feels good," Fouch said. "It's great to share victories.

"It's just icing on the cake to win individually."

Fouch and Arkansas sophomore Courtney Mahon finished tied, and the individual champion was determined by a single-hole playoff, which Fouch won just as she did Sept. 14 at Wisconsin.

The playoff hole came down to the green, as Fouch parred and Mahon missed a putt from 5 feet away.

"We encourage each other and both played well," Mahon said. "The weakest part of my game was my 5-foot putts."

Senior Sarah Martin, freshman Heather Rose and sophomore Dayna Burleigh helped clinch the win with 6-7-8 finishes, respectively.

Individual players Jennifer Johnson and Ann Marie Kersten both finished with 228 strokes and tied for ninth overall in the tournament.

Men's golf: The men's golf team beat two preseason ranked teams and finished seventh at the Inverness Intercollegiate tournament Saturday in Toledo, Ohio.

Senior Ben Fox and freshman Matt Harmon tied for 13th with 225 and led the Spartans ahead of No. 24 Minnesota and No. 30 Duke.
