On Wednesday, groups of MSU students lined up to purchase $2 videotapes in the Residence Halls Association movie rental office of Brody.
As technology continues to move ahead, RHA officials have decided to jump on the bandwagon by updating their movie offices with more DVDs.
More than 50 new DVD titles have been purchased and added to each RHA office, RHA movie office director Adam Raezler said.
"RHA wants to jump in and move forward," Raezler said.
For the first time ever, movies will be available for rental the first day they are released, he said. He said that all new releases through November have been ordered.
This year was the first time RHA offices were open for students on Friday of Welcome Weekend.
Raezler, a political theory and constitutional democracy junior, said he is excited to rent DVDs on campus.
"They have so much more special features," he said. "Plus, everybody loves to watch movies." This is a great change, and RHA will continue to progress, he said.
All proceeds from the VHS sale will go directly to buying new DVDs for RHA movie offices.
Brian Winters, director of public relations and advertising for RHA, said he is excited to be able to offer updated features to MSU students.
"We are right up there with Blockbuster," he said. "Technology has changed. Most students have access to DVD players."
But Theresa Grandys, who said she watches movies at least once a day, said the change will not be helpful for those who only have a VCR.
Grandys, a veterinary medicine freshman, said she isn't going to let the opportunity to purchase VHS tapes for such a great price slip away.
"New videos from Blockbuster cost $16 or $17," she said. "I like that they are selling them for $2."
Nursing freshman Shannon O'Donnell said she was amazed with the price the tapes are selling for.
"They are cheap," she said. O'Donnell, who has a DVD player but still enjoys watching VHS, said nothing will remain the same.
"Eventually, all movies will be DVDs," she said.
