Mich. Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off Sept. 15

Michigan Hispanic Heritage Month will take place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, according to Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Michigan Legislature.

The theme for this year's celebration is "Ascending to New Heights." There also will be a display in the Capitol showcasing Hispanic military veterans. Events will be held throughout Michigan to celebrate Hispanic music, food and culture.

On Oct. 1, Hispanics from around the state are invited to gather at the Capitol to take part in a day-long celebration. There will also be a dinner that night at the Holiday Inn South Lansing Convention Center, 6820 S. Cedar St., at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Hispanic Heritage Month dinner are $35 and can be purchased by contacting Maria Gutierrez-Ostrander at (517)669-7470. All the other celebrations are free and open to the public.
