Student takes on race for City Council seat

Along with three incumbent members, one MSU student will be running for a seat on the East Lansing City Council.

Caleb Marker, an international relations junior, who currently sits on the Transportation Commission and The State News Board of Directors, will run against Mayor Mark Meadows, Councilmember Sam Singh and Councilmember Beverly Baten as they try to keep their seats.

Because less than seven residents turned in application there will only be a general election held on Nov. 4.

At the application deadline, the four candidates automatically became nominees.

"(The number of candidates) varies from year to year," said Sharon Reid, East Lansing city clerk. "A lot of time, if there's an open seat, there tends to be more candidates because there's no name to run against."

City Council elections are held in odd-numbered years and the last year to have a primary election was 2001.
