Faculty receives honor from group

Soil biophysics Professor Alvin Smucker joins the list of MSU faculty who have been honored with the Humboldt Research Award.

The award comes from the Alexander von Humboldt Research Foundation, and is given to scientists and scholars for their academic successes. The German government founded the foundation in 1953 to be used for the collaboration of international research. Candidates for the award are selected by a German professor and scientists.

Computer science and engineering Professor Anil Jain, and chemistry Professor Mercouri Kanatzidis also received the award this year.

Smucker will work with faculty from the University of Kiel starting in 2004, while also visiting other universities to research biophysical and biogeochemical mechanisms of terrestrial carbon sequestration.
