Supporters take back night with stories

April 13, 2003

Tamika Payne can sympathize with the women who come to her with their stories of sexual violence.

She is a survivor herself.

"I feel like I don't want it to be for nothing," said Payne, sexual assault counseling staff coordinator for The Listening Ear Crisis Intervention Center. "There needs to be something positive to come out of it."

Payne is just one of the many women who shared personal stories, anger and poetry Saturday at Take Back the Night, a demonstration to end rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, incest and sexual harassment.

"I wish more people would come out and support an event that helps to raise awareness about sexual violence," said Payne, who has been involved with the event since 1999. "One out of four women should not have to be a survivor of rape in their lifetime."
