Student athletes recognized for school work

More than 200 MSU athletes were honored at the sixth annual Spartan Academic Excellence Gala on Sunday. The event, put on by Student-Athlete Support Services, recognized Spartans for academic accomplishments and community involvement.

Senior diver Stephanie Anisko (4.0) and senior soccer goalkeeper Tyler Robinson (3.95) won the President's Award, given annually to the graduating athletes with the highest grade-point averages.

Rookie football wide receiver Kyle Brown (3.64) and first-year volleyball player Kristy Snell (4.0) won the Provost's Award as the Freshman Student-Athletes of the Year.

The women's cross country team (3.42) and men's tennis (3.13) teams won the Athletics Director's Cup, given to the teams with the highest average GPA.

Junior football guard Joe Tate won the Community Service and Leadership Award for his involvement in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and reading to local schoolchildren.

On the faculty side, Marilyn Mook, an assistant professor in human nutrition, was voted this year's Outstanding Faculty member by the student-athletes.
