The State News took first place in general excellence in Division I of the Michigan Collegiate Press Association's College Newspaper Contest.
It's the second year the newspaper competed in the contest.
"This newspaper has a tradition of excellence and it compliments what we've done for a long time," Editor in Chief Kevin Hardy said.
Individual awards also were given. Managing Editor Steve Eder was named student journalist of the year.
Hardy said Eder always works hard and was deserving of the award.
