Groups plan affirmative action march in D.C.

MSU student groups plan to march on the nation's capital April 1.

Women's Council, Multi Racial Unity Living Experience and other organizations will demonstrate their support for affirmative action on the day the U.S. Supreme Court will review the University of Michigan's admissions policy.

Laura Sorensen, a member of Women's Council, said MSU groups have also talked with U-M student organizations and plan to travel the distance by bus.

"It's really just to march to show our support," Sorenson said, adding the groups want to make legislators realize the need for programs such as affirmative action.

MRULE member Quinton Robinson said the march reminds him of past civil rights activities.

"During the civil rights movements, they had marches for peace and rights, and this is the biggest thing in our generation, so I feel I can't miss it," he said.

While participating will mean missing class, Robinson said it's well worth it.

"This is bigger than class," he said. "College is a learning experience and this is something to take part in.

"Without the right decision in the Supreme Court, it could change the way our school goes."
