Davis' effort helps Spartans beat Hoosiers in OT

February 9, 2003

The MSU men's basketball team eeked out its first Big Ten road victory of the year Saturday night, defeating Indiana 67-62 in overtime.

The victory was the Spartans' (13-8 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) third straight conference win and the fourth in five games. The Hoosiers (14-8, 4-5) extended a frustrating conference losing streak to five straight.

Freshman forward Paul Davis led the team in scoring, netting 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field. Indiana freshman guard Bracey Wright scored 20 points for the Hoosiers but committed a costly overtime turnover that sealed Indiana's fate.

Sophomore guard Alan Anderson, normally a fixture in the Spartan starting lineup, watched the game in street clothes from the MSU bench with a heavily bandaged right hand. Anderson suffered an open dislocation of his fifth finger and is not expected to return for three weeks.

Head coach Tom Izzo - visibly worn from Saturday's nailbiter - said his squad's performance was one for the ages.

"I'm not sure I was ever prouder of a total team than I am today," he said.
