'U' photographers take top awards in contest

Five-year-old Damonta Davis peeks out the window of a bedroom he shares with his brother and sister in November. The box he sits in was used in moving to the new house in Lansing during the first week his family spent in the home.

The State News claimed honors in the 2002 Michigan Press Photographers Association's annual Picture of the Year contest.

Former State News photographer Megan Spelman, an international relations senior, was named College Photographer of the Year.

Spelman's portfolio showcased 10 pieces, which included nine single images and a photo story titled "Finding Home."

"I'm flattered," she said. "I didn't really expect it."

Spelman said the real thrill is the contest puts college photographers head-to-head with professional photojournalists.

"For the paper, that's a lot more exciting," she said. "We're competing with the best photographers in the state."

She also took home third place for a news picture story and two honorable mentions for feature photos and portraits.

Advertising senior Nick Short, also a former State News staffer, was runner-up for the award.

This is the sixth year in a row a State News photographer has been named photographer of the year.

State News photographer Mairin Chapman took home third place for a sports action photo.
