Whats Happening?

Clubs

  • The MSU Aikido Club will be meeting from 6:45-8 p.m. on Jan. 30 in the IM Sports-West Judo Room. All are welcome. No experience necessary.
  • The MSU Chess Club will be meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in Room A-517 Wells Hall. Bring your own equipment. For more information, e-mail msuchess@msu.edu.
Events

  • Alternative Spring Break will be holding a fund-raiser on Friday at Rio Bravo, 1938 W. Grand River Ave. in Okemos. If people eat there and say they are there to help support ASB, Rio Bravo will donate 20 percent of that party's total bill to ASB. ASB will donate the money to three organizations they will be working with during spring break in Queretaro, Mexico.
  • Michigan State Sustainable Agriculture Network will be holding a seminar on Localized Food Systems in a Global Context at noon on Thursday in Room 222 Erickson Hall. Michael Hamm will discuss how local food systems still have a role in globalization. Hamm comes to MSU from Rutgers University where he directed the New Jersey Urban Ecology Program.
  • MSU's Asian Studies Center will be holding its Spring Colloquium Series - Globalization and Local Rights: Asian Perspectives at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Room 201 International Center. Caitrin Lynch from Johns Hopkins University will present "Gender, Culture and Labor Rights in the Sri Lankan Garment Industry."
  • MSU School of Music will present a Super Bowl of Concerts at 7 p.m. on Sunday. It will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas, 955 Alton St. Under the direction of Leon Gregorian, the MSU Symphony Orchestra will perform various pieces. Guest artists and MSU faculty members include Dmitri Berlinsky, violinist; Suren Bagratuni, violoncellist; and MSU alumnus Stephen Lange, organist. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the door or at the MSU School of Music. Tickets are $7 general, $5 for senior citizens and free for students and those under 18.
  • Students for Choice will be holding a Rally for Choice and Candlelight Vigil for Roe v. Wade at 7 p.m. tonight at the Erickson Hall Kiva and the rock on Farm Lane. The group plans to discuss pro-choice issues at the rally and will be honoring those who have lost their lives to illegal abortions at the vigil.
  • Students for Life will be holding a Roe v. Wade Candlelight Vigil at 8 p.m. on Thursday at the rock on Farm Lane. The vigil will honor the women hurt and fetuses killed by abortion. There will be an opportunity for attendants to share stories.
  • The Hospitality Association will be hosting Vegas Night from 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturday in the Union Ballroom. The $5 cover charge will buy $5 in chips. Must be older than 18 to attend. For more information, call Chrysse Preonas at (517)290-0710.
  • The Society of Success and Leadership will hold a live video conference at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Room 2400 Engineering Building. Nancy Hunter Denney will be addressing students on the topic "The Future is Yours to Create: A Look at Life and Leadership." All students are welcome.
Organizational Meetings

  • ALANA, organization for student journalists of color, will be holding its first meeting of the semester today at 7 p.m. in Room 148 of the Communication Arts Building. ALANA meetings are open to all.
  • The Romance Languages Film Series, put on by the Department of Romance and Classical Languages, will be showing its second movie of the semester, "25 Watts," at 5:30 p.m. in Room 206 Old Horticulture Building.
  • Adventist Student Fellowship will be holding a vegetarian dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at 504 Ann St. Everyone is welcome to come and discuss topics relevant to Christian living as students. For more information, contact Jason Lounds at (517)374-6557.
  • Habitat for Humanity will be holding a general membership meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the Illinois Room of the Union. Everyone is welcome. For more information about Habitat for Humanity, visit www.msuhabitat.org.
  • Students for Peace and Justice will be meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Room 121 Baker Hall. This will be an organizing meeting with a focus on anti-war events.
  • The Preprofessional Society for Health Careers of AED will be holding its first meeting of the semester today at 7:30 p.m. in the Northwestern Room of the Union. The society welcomes all interested students to come and hear what life is really like from a panel of professional students (medical, dental, physician assistant) from a variety of professional schools in Michigan.
