Possibly the funniest movie ever made, "The Jerk" stands as the granddaddy of dumb-ass humor. Rampantly politically incorrect and good-natured enough to get away with it, the film interlaces sly wit with slapstick and gross-out gags that modern comedy attempts and fails to mimic.
Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) was "born a poor black child." The kind but completely idiotic Navin just doesn't feel he has a place in his family's farm.
With his trusty dog Shithead in tow, Navin sets out to find his purpose in the world and, of course, hilarity ensues.
"The Jerk" is likely the most asinine film ever made. Martin's character is so dimwitted, so oblivious and yet so honest and likable, you can't help but root for him. Navin is probably the dumbest character in cinematic history.
As Hollywood shovels out lackluster comedies based on idiocy, try not to forget the original - "The Jerk." It was cutting edge, and it gave Martin a name outside of "Saturday Night Live." Its most important contribution, though, is its tongue-in-cheek comedy and its humor, insensitivity and all, still manages to knock you on the ground with fits of inspired laughter.
