ASMSU still lacking top director

A candidate being considered for a top position within ASMSU has withdrawn his name from consideration.

Andrew Schepers, a candidate for association director of the student organization, said Sunday that he would rather commit his time to his other responsibilities as a member of MSU's undergraduate student government.

"I have no wanting to continue. I'm taking my name out," he said. "We drag our feet so much we get in the way of doing stuff."

The association director supervises the executive board and steering committee. The director also serves as a communication bridge between the student and academic assemblies.

Schepers, who serves as a representative for the College of Natural Science, also said he was disappointed the committee could not come to a consensus after debating over Schepers and interim association director James Perra for several hours before winter break.

Matt Weingarden, student assembly chairperson, said no decision was made because of the large number of people on the committee and the need for a unanimous vote.

"If one person says no, it's no for everyone," he said.

But Matt Clayson, academic assembly chairperson said the committee was probably too serious about selecting either candidate, which cost them time in making a final choice.

Clayson said the group should wait until March when a new hiring cycle goes into effect for ASMSU. If an association director was hired before March, they would only be employed for two months.

"All parts of this association are moving forward except for that part," Clayson said. "It's too much wasting time."

Whenever the interviewing process starts back up it will be under a new hiring committee and new candidates can apply.

This will be the second semester in a row the organization will be working without the presence of a permanent association director.

The position has been vacant since August when Joe Mignano resigned citing scheduling conflicts, and Perra has been acting as interim association director since October.

"It's just the way things go," Perra said. "The process really has dragged on," he said.
