'Bees' to swarm with murals, slide show

Storytellers from the Beehive Design Collective will present five-foot tall murals and a slide show on colonialism in the Americas at 7 p.m. today in 101 North Kedzie Hall.

The "bees," as they call themselves, will talk about how American miltarism, scientific research, free trade and the drug war have affected the people and environment of Colombia.

For research, members of the collective went to Colombia and Ecuador for four months earlier this year to speak with social activists and workers in the country. They also drew part of the mural there.

"Most people don't know about Plan Colombia," one member said about the plan, which they oppose. "But it's easy for people to remember the information because it's visual, and it's easy to retell the story.

"It's spreading like wildfire."

Students for Economic Justice is sponsoring the free event, but is asking for donations for the collective. For more information, visit www.beehivecollective.org.
