Cross country teams finish second and sixth

No. 23 MSU missed claiming its second consecutive Big Ten title by just three points Sunday, finishing behind Michigan with a score of 73.

Junior Michelle Carson finished first in the 5-kilometer race with a time of 17:24 to become MSU’s first individual champion in 11 years, earning All-Big Ten first team accolades for her efforts. Junior Jamie Krzyminski also received All-Big Ten first team honors, finishing just 10 seconds after Carson to claim the runner-up spot.

MSU will try to repeat its Great Lakes Regional Championship in its next meet Saturday, Nov. 16, in West Lafayette, Ind.

The MSU men’s cross country team placed sixth at the 2002 Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette Sunday with a score of 156.

Sophomore Chris Toloff was the Spartan front-runner in the race, finishing 17th in the 8-kilometer course. Toloff’s time of 24:44.6 was nearly 40 seconds worse than his previous time, a fifth-place finish at the Pre-Nationals Oct. 19.

The Spartans will also compete in the Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 16.
