Bobby's World no more

November 6, 2002

Matt McKenna isn't going to hide his "Bobby's World" jersey in the back of his closet just yet.

The co-director of Bobby's World said he thinks firing Bobby Williams was the right decision, especially after Williams admitted he "didn't know" if he had control of the team after the loss to Michigan on Saturday.

But he said he's still an enthusiastic MSU fan and a proud member of the cheering section now called the "Spartan Football Spirit Section."

"I'll probably still wear the jersey," McKenna said. "It doesn't bother me too bad."

McKenna and co-director Joe Mesher said the rest of the green-jerseyed fans also are staying positive, sending e-mails to urge everyone to support the team despite the losses, the coaching change and the player problems.

The group hasn't canceled its road trip to Indiana this weekend.

It only asked the members to leave the "Bobby's World" jerseys at home and opt for traditional MSU garb instead.

At a meeting tonight, discussion will begin for a new name, although Mesher said there won't be a final call until a new coach is in place.

Athletics Director Ron Mason named offensive coordinator Morris Watts interim head coach, but said Watts will not be named head coach for next year.

"There won't be a catchy name until we know who the new coach is or until we know what's in place for next year," Mesher said.

"We've got some really interesting suggestions. Someone wanted to call it 'The Mo Zone,' someone else said, 'Bleed Green.' Someone wants to call it 'Watts' World.'"

McKenna heard a suggestion for "The Enron Company," and said members are having fun thinking of funny names.

But joking aside, Mesher said he knows the section has a serious job to fulfill - remaining supportive about MSU's football team.

He doesn't think there will be trouble generating that excitement.

"As a section, we're still strong," he said. "This section is really comprised of kids who are die-hard MSU fans. I mean, we live, eat, sleep and breath MSU as fans."
