All indications point to Rogers jetting for NFL

Yeah, this season hasn't been much fun to watch. To be perfectly honest, it's been down right torturous.

But at least we've had our weekly installment of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood to count on.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior has been nothing short of spectacular. And next to Marshall and its quarterback Byron Leftwich, no other school in the country can say they've had the pleasure of watching a true game-breaking superstar each and every week.

I don't know about the rest of you, but Charles Rogers' amazing catches have been burned into my memory. I mean, come on, how can anyone forget either of his games against Notre Dame, his record-breaking afternoon against Fresno State or even last weekend's performance against the Boilermakers?

But before we get too worked up, let's not forget the NFL is knocking on his door with a truck full of money parked in the driveway.

Sure, he's said all season he doesn't know what he plans to do and that he's waiting till the end of the season to make a decision. But even he admits the topic has been impossible to avoid all season.

"You really can't because of the papers and the ESPN guy," Rogers said Tuesday after practice. "It's been a bug around.

"I've just been sitting back, kind of just listening to everything and just waiting till after the season ends."

Yeah, we can all cross our fingers and pray to whatever god we think will listen. But who are we kidding?

Following Saturday's showdown with the Nittany Lions, the only way Spartan fans are going to see Chuck playing for the Green and White is in reruns.

Just stop and think about it. But if you need a little help, maybe MSU interim head coach Morris Watts can help you put it in perspective.

"In all my 42 years of coaching I haven't been around any better," Watts said. "And I've been around some pretty good receivers - about five first round draft choices."

And like the rest of us, Watts understands what that means.

"Do I expect it to be his last ball game? I don't doubt a bit that that's a strong consideration of his," he said. "But I wouldn't feel right making a comment about what Chuck's going to do. I'd rather that comment come from him."

No surprise there. And neither is the fact that Rogers still doesn't want to announce his decision.

Yeah, we all know what it is. But it is somewhat commendable that he's got enough respect for his teammates to wait till after the season. Although, he did say the decision could come as early as Saturday's postgame.

"Before I do anything there's still some guys I'd like to talk to," Rogers said. "Just get their input on some things."

Rogers declined to provide the entire list, but he said former head coach Bobby Williams will certainly get a call.

"I came here because of Bobby," he said. "I'll talk to Bobby just to hear what he's got to say. I feel like I owe him that."

Well, much like Williams, Rogers will soon have that "former" tag before his name.

"I left my mark though," Rogers said. "That's what it's about."

I don't know if that's what it's all about, but he has definitely left an impressive mark. He's shattered just about every MSU record he can and captured the Big Ten and NCAA record for consecutive games with a touchdown.

Yet Rogers admits, if this is his last year with the Spartans, he'll leave without accomplishing his No. 1 goal.

"The biggest thing is I wanted the ring," he said. "I fell short of the ring. That's probably what hurts me the most."

Regardless, Rogers believes he's earned the right to be placed among MSU's top athletes.

"They're going to remember me the same way they remember Magic and Kirk Gibson," he said. "Just being on top."

Don't worry Chuck. I'd say it's safe to say you'll be remembered as the most talented Spartan ever to take the field at Spartan Stadium.
