The No. 5 MSU field hockey has compiled an 11-2 overall, 2-1 Big Ten record so far and is looking to finish its final seven games of the regular season the same way it always has - with convincing wins.
This season the Spartans have dominated the competition, outscoring opponents 52-9.
MSU has shut out seven teams, allowing just one squad to strike more than once.
The only two losses it has suffered were decided by a lone goal. The first was a 3-2 overtime decision against defending National Champion Old Dominion in the season-opener. The second, a 1-0 loss, came Oct. 4 against No. 2 Michigan.
As the season comes to a close, the Spartans schedule remains a challenging one. This weekend, MSU returns home for a pair of games against Indiana and No. 11 Louisville.
Indiana comes to Ralph Young Field Saturday sporting a losing record of 3-8, 1-1, but is flying high after upsetting No. 20 Ohio State, 3-2 on Saturday.
Theyre going to be coming out fired up, thats for sure, Spartan head coach Michele Madison said. Those kids play hard, they got their first Big Ten win and theyre excited about that.
In last years matchup, MSU edged the Hoosiers 3-2 in overtime.
Weve always had troubles against them, they are a team that goes for it and hits really strong balls, it kind of gets us out of our game, junior midfielder Sophie Rosmalen said. The key is to block off the passes and put pressure on them so they cant get the ball through.
On Sunday, MSU faces off against No. 11 Louisville, which leads the Mid-American Conference with a 9-4 record.
Cardinals head coach Pam Bustin was an assistant coach under Madison from 1994-97, so the Spartans can be sure Louisville will be a formidable opponent.
Shes an extremely good coach, Madison said. They are very skilled defensively too, theyre a top team.
Everyones in the hunt now. At this point in the season we just have to prepare to be the best team we can be every day.
Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Ralph Young Field.
