I am reading a lot of anti-football head coach Bobby Williams letters to the editor in The State News lately, and I cant take it anymore.
He has only coached at MSU for a few years and led some pretty respectable teams during that time. All coaches go through a learning period where they find their own personal style and coaching techniques.
In high school I played under a head coach who was in his first three years. We had an overall record of 13-14, and it wasnt from a lack of talent.
We had the largest team in our division, along with an all-state fullback.
During our head coachs fourth year, our team won both our division and our regional games. This year, my former high school team is on pace to do the same thing having already clinched the divisional crown.
I am not saying that MSU is going to win the Big Ten next year or the year after that - or that Williams is a good coach. But if you dont give the man time to develop, youll never know.
Also, I have a feeling that blame lies on more than just the coach. How many times did the Spartans Heisman Trophy candidate drop the ball this year?
How many drive-ending penalties has the team committed?
I think everybody needs to stop trying to find scapegoats for the teams losses.
