WEB ONLY: Womens golf places 6th in tourney

The women’s golf team placed sixth in the New Mexico State Give’Em Five Intercollegiate on Wednesday at the University of New Mexico Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Spartans shot a team score of 294 in the three-round tournament, rounding out at 915 (315-306-294) and trailing fifth place finisher Texas El Paso by two strokes. Baylor won the event at 894 (304-297-293).

Leading the Spartans in every round was junior Sarah Martin, who placed sixth overall with a three-day score of 221 (74-75-72). Junior Allison Fouch placed seventh with her overall score of 223 (76-75-72), while freshman standout Dayna Burleigh tied for 37th with a three-round score of 232 (80-78-74).

Other top performances came from junior Ann Marie Kersten who tied for 60th place with 239 (85-78-76) and red-shirted freshman Christy Jonkhoff who shot a three-round score of 240 (85-78-77) and placed 64th overall.

The team continues its season Oct. 18 at the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate in Knoxville, Tenn.
