WEB ONLY: MTV game singles out students on campus

A legion of students vying for the affection of four singles entered the ultimate compatibility contest Thursday night - hoping to get singled out.

Case Hall Singled Out, sponsored by the Case Hall government, was based on the popular MTV 1990s game show, “Singled Out.”

The price for the winners of the contest was an all-expenses-paid dinner to Olive Garden Italian Restaurant, 5015 Marsh Road in Okemos.

About 30 men and 40 women were placed in the dating pool. People from the dating pool had various stickers placed on them describing their physical and personal character. Men and women played at different times.

A blindfolded contestant was then placed in front of a screen. The contestant would pick a category, and people that didn’t match the contestant’s answers were eliminated.

“I showered for the first time in awhile and lost on the first question,” general management freshman Sam Madorsky said.

The person with the golden ticket would advance to the final round.

Adam Glatz, resident at large for Case Hall government, said about 200 people attended the event. The game was put on for less than $350.

Glatz said the game was composed of three rounds. The first round was intended to eliminate the dating pool to 10 or fewer contestants.

The second round consisted of a different contests, such as freakiest dance or unwrapping a Starburst with only one’s mouth. In the last round, the three survivors had to match five questions with how the contestant would answer them. The first contestant to match all five questions won.

At the end of the contest four contestants, two women and two men were matched up with four people from the dating pool.

At the end of the first game, no-preference freshman Brady Burns was matched up with no-preference freshman Maggie Giddens.

Giddens was eliminated during the first round, but was saved with the golden ticket.

“I think it was a sign I was saved,” she said. “The event was really fun, I’m really looking forward to the Olive Garden.”

Derek Wallbank, external vice president for the Residence Halls Association and former Case Hall representative, said the event was similar to “Case Hall’s Castaways,” because it also was based on a television show, “Survivor.” The event was held in the spring of 2002 and about 1,300 people attended the event.

Marketing sophomore Justin Chung, who lives in Wonders Hall, said he enjoyed watching the event and would attend similar events if they were put on in the residence halls.

“I just think it’s cool because it’s hard to get a student function this big and they’re finally doing it,” he said.
