Landslide for Levin

Voters should support veteran senator in race for fifth term; Detroiter is Michigans voice

In the race for the U.S. Senate, no one is better equipped than incumbent Carl Levin. The 68-year-old senator is the best candidate to serve Michigan and the country, hands down. Michigan voters should reward the Detroit Democrat by granting the veteran statesman a fifth term in Washington.

Levin’s opponent, state Sen. Andrew “Rocky” Raczkowski is no match for the man who has Michigan’s premier voice on Capitol Hill since 1979.

Green Party candidate Eric Borregard, Natural Law Party candidate Doug Dern and Reform Party candidate John S. Mangopoulos also are running for the seat.

Levin has only improved during his tenure and has fought for issues affecting all citizens, and his achievements are proof. His influence on a national level is unparalleled.

Levin serves the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Government Affairs’ permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

On the Armed Services Committee, Levin advocated an approach to the Iraqi conflict emphasizing international cooperation, U.N. involvement, as well as congressional control. He also is upholding protection of the United States against terrorism through trying to better coordinate intelligence gathering efforts to prevent future terrorist attacks.

Levin’s chairmanship of the Subcommittee on Investigations has boosted him to the level of the Senate’s “main man” on corporate scandals, such as the Enron case brought to the national spotlight earlier this year.

He is well known and has not lost touch with the state, despite his busy schedule in Washington.

Levin is well aware of the issues affecting Michigan and frequently addresses them in the U.S. Senate. He fights on behalf of all Michigan citizens, advocating social rights issues.

The senator supports efforts to strengthen Social Security, opposing privatization and diverting trust fund dollars for other purposes.

He supports affirmative action programs addressing effects of past discrimination. Levin also supports the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, and believes discrimination based on sexual orientation should not be allowed under civil rights laws.

While Raczkowski is younger than the state’s veteran senator, he also is less mature when it comes to the nation’s most important issues.

The Farmington Hills Republican is anti-affirmative action and did not respond to The State News when questioned about gay rights. Raczkowski wants to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education and speaks to the idea of privatizing social security.

It is not time to send a freshman to Washington when Michigan has a superior and helpful voice already there.

Levin is a staunch supporter of education. He is an advocate of HOPE Scholarship tax credit, Pell Grant increases, making state tuition plans tax-free and permanently excluding employer-funded education benefits from taxes. He also is looking toward the environmental future by supporting energy conservation, new technology such as fuel cells and hybrid engines.

Michigan cannot afford to lose its most valuable voice. Send Levin back to Washington.
