Cross country teams finish 7th and 11th

Sophomore Chris Toloff led the men’s cross country team to a seventh place finish in the White Race of the Asics/Pacesetters Pre-Nationals on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.

Toloff’s time of 24 minutes, 08 seconds landed him a fifth place finish in a field of 244 individual runners from some of the top teams in the nation, including No. 3 Colorado who won the meet.

“We ran better as a team,” head coach Jim Stintzi said. “We still have some issues we need to resolve, and if we do we will be sitting well to finish in the top four in the Big Ten Tournament.”

The No. 3 women’s team finished 11th in the same Pre-NCAA race.

Junior Michelle Carson led the Spartans with a time of 20:53, finishing 18th out of the 254 runners.

Stintzi said he was disappointed with the finish and said injuries are affecting the team’s performance.

“When they are healthy they can be in contention for the Big Ten Championship,” Stintzi said. “If we stay healthy we can make a run for it.”

Both teams will compete in Eastern Michigan Cross Country Classic on Friday in Ypsilanti.
